The Burdens of Life

A burden may be defined as a heavy load of care, causing us to feel helpless and depressed. Burdens are a common part of life. Prayer offers a way to cast our burdens upon God. He may not change your circumstances immediately, but God will sustain you. "Cast your burden on the LORD, and He will sustain you" (Psalm 55:22).

Casting your burdens upon the LORD means that you are willing to let go of them. You may be helpless, but God is not. The load of care may be too much for you, but never too much for Him. The words of an old song say: "Take your burden to the LORD and leave it there." That's just what you do in prayer, as you admit your weakness. His strength overcomes your weakness.

What's your burden? More importantly, what will you do with it? If you hold on to it, the load becomes heavier, and the depression can almost become unbearable. Your strength diminishes oh so fast, as you cling to the burdens of life. Frustration gives way only to more despair.

There is a better way. Cast your burden on the LORD. You can no longer cling to it, when you cast it upon Him. Then, God's grace will sustain you. God says to you, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). God's grace is His favor, unmerited favor, on your life. It comes to you by faith in Jesus Christ. Trust Him with every burden. Your feeling helpless is an opportunity to see God's grace at work in your life. He is your strength in weakness.
