Called to be Friends

Jesus said, "I have called you to be friends,
for all things that I heard from My Father
I have made known to you."

John 15:15

A Sunday School teacher asked the children in her class to tell who their best friend was. One boy said, "My dad is my best friend." Another boy said, "Billy is my best friend." A girl said, "My best friend is Jesus. I love Him and He loves me." The teacher said, "That's good. Jesus wants to be friends with all of us, even our best friend."

The Christian life, stated in simple terms, means that we have an eternal friendship with Jesus that even death cannot destroy. You probably have heard the words to a beautiful old hymn of the church: "What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer." A personal relationship with the Lord may simply be defined as friendship.

Friends share conversations with each other about their lives. They really know one another. Jesus shares all things with His friends. As friends of Jesus, we read His words in the Bible. He reveals God to us in such a way that we may know Him personally. We share our lives with Him in prayer. He wants us to talk to Him about our burdens and concerns, even our sins and grief. That's the way friends are. They talk about everything. Jesus called us to be friends.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the best friend that we could ever have, and we are friends forever.
