Jesus said, "Without Me you can do nothing."
John 15: 5
A man had been involved in a serious automobile accident. He was in the intensive care unit of the hospital. His pastor visited him. The man said, "I have never felt so helpless in all my life." The pastor said, "I understand." The man went on to say, "I'm so helpless, that without God's help, I'm not going to live." The pastor said, "Really, all of us are helpless without God, but most of us don't know it. The good news is that God is the help of the helpless, and I know He will help you." The man survived and regained his health, but he always remembered that without God he was helpless.
Jesus said to His disciples, "Without Me you can do nothing." He says the same thing to all of us today. The circumstances of life can change fast to show us irrefutably that we are helpless without the Lord. But don't forget the good news: "So we can boldly say, The Lord is my helper" (Hebrews 13:6). Abide with Me is the title of an old hymn of the church. It includes these words: "Help of the helpless, abide with me." When we feel helpless is a good time to discover that the Lord will not leave us helpless. Jesus promised to send believers another helper, the Holy Spirit. He is with us always.
When you feel helpless in any situation of life, don't forget that the Helper is available. Call upon Him. Trust Him. He is the faithful and dependable Helper who abides with us. He will comfort you and strengthen your faith. He will encourage you with hope. He will give you peace that you may rest in Him. We are helpless, and certain circumstances may prove it, but the believer is never without the Helper.
Prayer: God, we boldly say, the Lord is my helper. Amen.
