Strengthen Your Faith

"He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief,
but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God."

Romans 4:20

A woman said to her pastor, "I must admit my faith is not as strong as it should be, and it's taking a toll on my prayer life. I seem to bounce like a ball from faith to unbelief when I ask God for anything. Now, I seem to pray less and less. Can you help me?" The pastor said, "I think so. My faith has often bounced back to unbelief in asking God through prayer. The one thing that has helped me more than anything is basing all my requests in prayer on the certain promises of God that we read in the Bible."

Abraham is often used in the Bible as an example of faith. He too based his faith on the promises of God. He even gave glory to God for fulfilling the promises before the answer became visible. Strong faith is based on God's sovereign ability to keep all of His promises. God's promises are based upon His covenant oath. For example, if we give witness in a court of law, we take an oath to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. To lie in court is a criminal offense. God has given us the oath of His covenant word, and you can be sure that the God of all truth will never lie. Strong faith is not about our strength, it's about God's strong oath to keep His promises. We give glory to God as we take His promises by faith.

How strong is your faith? Read the promises of God in your Bible. Memorize them. Pray them back to God. Give Him glory for those promises. "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). God's word is the absolute sure foundation for our faith. The strength of God to keep His word of promise is the basis for strong faith. Take God at His word and strengthen your faith.

Prayer: God, we are basing our faith on the sure promises of Your word, in Jesus name. Amen.
