"Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered."
Psalm 32:1
We went to eat at a cafeteria. After we got our food, a waitress said to me, "Be blessed." I said to her, "You are a Christian. Are you?" She smiled and said, "Yes, I am." I responded, "You know the One who blesses us." Later, I thought about that brief conversation. I wondered, how many people don't know what it means to be blessed? It means, as the psalmist wrote, that our sins are forgiven and covered.
The words blessed and cursed are covenant terms from the Bible. To be blessed is to find God's favor, resulting in happiness. To be cursed is to be cut-off from the blessings of God. The covenant promise of God for every believer is recorded in Jeremiah 31:34, God says, "For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." God will never break the vow of His everlasting covenant with all who believe. That covenant was sealed at the cross, in the death of the Son of God (Hebrews 13:20-21).
Being blessed by God through the forgiveness of our sins brings joy in life. It is a fruit of God's Spirit working in our lives. The psalmist concludes the psalm with a testimony of joy in the LORD. "Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous; and shout for joy, all you upright in heart" (Psalm 32:11). Through a personal relationship with the LORD, every believer is blessed.
Prayer: LORD, You have blessed us through the promises of the everlasting covenant. You have forgiven all of our sins and filled our lives with joy, in Jesus name. Amen.
