"And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you.
He will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you;
do not fear nor be dismayed."
He will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you;
do not fear nor be dismayed."
Deuteronomy 31:8
She said to her husband, "I'm worried about so many things that I don't know what to do." He said, "I can tell you what to do. Write them all down on slips of paper. I don't want you to forget them. Then, we can put them in a worry box. That will be our prayer list. Why should we worry, when we can pray?" She said, "I know you're not serious." He quickly responded, "Oh, yes, I am serious. The LORD will go before you. He will answer those prayers." They did just that. Her worries faded away as they prayed together. They really believed that their future was in the hands of God.
"And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you." Moses spoke those words to Joshua, the new leader of the people of God. They were ready to go into the promised land. There would be enemies to face and battles to fight. The generation before them refused to cross into the promised land. They were afraid of the future. They failed to find God's best for their lives. You could say, they worried about the future. However, God is our future. C. S. Lewis wrote that God lives in the eternal now. He knows about a certain future. When we trust the promise of His presence, our worries come to naught.
Worry frets and says, "What if this happens? What if that happens?" Faith calmly asserts, "God happens to be my future." Sweet rest comes to the worried soul who dares to believe that God goes before us. He prepares the way for us. Nothing catches Him by surprise. He promises to be with us. Such wonderful promises may easily be dismissed by unbelief. The result is tragic. We remain worried about the future. To the contrary, faith receives and rejoices in the promises of God. Take His promises and give God your worries.
Prayer: Father, You are our future. We give up our worries to Your sure word of promise, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
