The Good Life

Jesus said, "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit,
nor can a bad tree bear good fruit."

Matthew 7:18

Well, that time has come once again to take the Christmas tree down. Families have gathered. Gifts have been exchanged. Children have laughed with delight opening their gifts with surprise. The joy of the season has past. It's time to take the tree down. That was always a sad time for me as a child. The excitement of Christmas was over. The Christmas tree symbolizes the season.

Jesus spoke of trees as a symbol for the lives of people. Their actions being either good fruit or bad fruit. The Spirit of Christ bears good fruit in the lives of believers (Galatians 5:22-23).

A tree cannot bear good fruit of itself. It must be planted in the right place and bear fruit in due season. Jesus reminds His disciples, that without Him we can do nothing. Without the roots of a tree planted in fertile soil receiving ample water, it simply cannot bear good fruit. When our lives are planted in Christ by faith, His Spirit working through us is the source of all good fruit.

The Christmas tree is the gathering place for the family to experience love, joy and peace. How much love, joy and peace have our lives brought to the people around us? "Only one life, t'will soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last." That's the good life, because it bears good fruit.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, without You we can do nothing to bear good fruit. Plant our lives where You want us. Bear good fruit through us in Your name. Amen.
