Your Conscience

"Who show the work of the law written in their hearts,
their conscience also bearing witness . . ."

Romans 2:15

Immanuel Kant, a philosopher, wrote the book Critique of Pure Reason. He stated that there were only two things that filled him with awe, the starry heavens above and human conscience. God has given witness to all mankind through creation and conscience. The created order testifies to the Creator, and conscience testifies to man's accountability to God. The creation gives witness to the power and glory of God. Conscience is a sure witness to the judgment of God and man's need for the mercy of God.

A seminary student was distributing gospel literature on the busy street of a large city. He asked a man, "Are you a believer in Jesus Christ?" The man stopped. He thought for a minute, then he said, "Let me put it this way. I know the difference between right and wrong." After saying that, he walked away. When the man admitted knowing the difference between right and wrong, he was was testifying to the power of his own conscience. Our conscience speaks to us, telling us when we have done right or wrong. It testifies that we will give account of our lives to God.

What is your conscience saying to you? At one time or another, conscience calls us to recognize our sins. It's at that point we may seek to discover God's mercy or seek to silence the voice of conscience. Adamantly refusing to listen to the conscience hardens our hearts against God. When we seek God's mercy, it is available. Jesus told the story of a man who found God's mercy through a simple one sentence prayer. He simply prayed, "God be merciful to me a sinner." Jesus declared that he was justified, made right with God because of mercy. Always allow the conscience to lead you to God's mercy.

Prayer: "God be merciful to me a sinner."
