"I will instruct you and teach you
in the way you should go.
I will guide you with my eye."
Psalm 32:8
"But He'll guide us with His eye and we'll follow 'til we die. We will understand it better by and by." Those are the words of an old hymn. God always delights in leading His children in the right way. He will lead us, as we are willing to follow. The Lord leads us with the eye of a shepherd. His eye sees the path ahead. The shepherd leads the sheep with his voice. Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27). The voice of the Lord comes to us through the Bible. He still speaks to the sheep. He instructs us and teaches us through the Scripture.
The eye of the shepherd watches the sheep to protect. The Lord is more than able to protect us as His children. Nothing, absolutely nothing, in our lives is beyond the watchcare of our Shepherd. The path could be dangerous with carnivorous animals ready to attack the sheep. The shepherd was the protector. So, the Lord is the protector with us as believers. The shepherd's eye was the protection of the sheep.
The eye of the shepherd watches the sheep to prevent them from going astray. God's people, like sheep, are prone to go astray. The shepherd's staff was used to keep the sheep on the right path. Sheep are known to easily go astray. Their eyes are not dependable to find the way. Their guidance comes from the shepherd's eye. As believers, we can trust God's eye to lead us, even when we can't trust our own eye. "He will guide us with His eye."
Lord Jesus, You are the good Shepherd. Your eye will guide us on all the paths of life. We trust You to guide us all the way. Amen.
