Remember the Cross

"His visage was marred more than any man."

Isaiah 52:14

Driving down a highway, I noticed on the side of the road a cross with a name printed on it. Next to the cross were flowers. No doubt, someone died at that place in a wreck. His death is not forgotten. When we read in the prophecy of Isaiah about the death of Christ, His death must never be forgotten. His death at the cross was no accident. To the contrary, it was according to the eternal purpose of God. He was crucified according to "the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God" (Acts 2:23). The evil plot of men was used by God to fulfill His plan to save all who believe in His Son Jesus Christ.

The cross of Christ will always be remembered, because the Father draws people to Himself through Christ crucified. Jesus said, "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people unto Myself" (John 12:32. Jew and Gentile, from all nations, the power of the cross draws people to God. The cross will always be remembered, because the preaching of the cross is still the power of God unto salvation for all who believe (1 Cor. 1:18).

The cross will always be remembered, because the Lord's Supper is received by God's people the world over. Jesus said, "This do in remembrance of Me." To the unbeliever it is a meaningless ritual for religious people. To the believer, it is the reminder of the One, and only One, who "was marred more than any man" in our place to take away our sins. The Lord's table is the place where we continue to remember the cross.

God, we give thanks now and forever for Christ crucified for us. Amen.
