Weak in Faith

"Receive one who is weak in the faith,
but not to disputes over doubtful things."

Romans 14:1

Faith is like a muscle, it has to be exercised to grow stronger. To exercise a muscle effectively requires a proper diet. So it is with our faith. The proper diet for faith is a steady diet of the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Faith grows stronger as we exercise in obedience to God's Word, "for obedience to the faith" (Romans 16:26). Our faith is either growing stronger or becoming weaker. The choice is ours.

The apostle Paul warned the church to stay away from disputes over doubtful things that could be a real stumbling block to one who is weak in the faith. This introduces another issue in our life of faith. The people around us can have an effect on our faith. Being in a group that focuses on doubtful things can be an influence to weaken our faith. On the other hand, finding a faith support group, such as a church, Bible study group or prayer group, can strengthen our faith.

Is your faith growing stronger or becoming weaker? Only you can answer that question. A weaker faith causes our prayer life to become weaker. It may even cause us to doubt our salvation. Weaker faith hinders us from receiving all that God wants to do in our lives (James 1:6-7). Determine to become stronger in your faith. Read the Bible. Obey the Word of God. Exercise your faith. Receive all that God has for you.

Father, we thank You for the gift of faith. Help us to grow stronger in our faith through Bible study and obedience, as the Holy Spirit works in us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
