Freedom in Christ

"Stand therefore in the liberty
by which Christ has made us free."

Galatians 5:1

A man was addicted to drugs. He said to a friend, "If only I could be free from this addiction, I would be so happy. I've tried hard to break free, but it just doesn't work." His friend said, "I know exactly how that feels. When I was addicted to strong drugs, I felt helpless and saw no way out. Someone told me how the Lord could make me free. I told him quickly that this was not about religion. It was about a chemical problem. He patiently shared with me how Christ made him free. I thought that was too good to be true, but when I called on the name of the Lord, I can honestly say that He set me free."

The apostle Paul wrote, "Christ has made us free." He was talking about the curse of sin. We are all bound by some kind of sin at one time or another. It doesn't have to be drugs. We are helpless to break the bondage of sin without God's help. It's God's will that we become free. The misery of our own sin addiction may cause us to resign to the idea that there is no way out. There is true liberty in Christ. That does not mean that we will not be tempted again. It does mean that Christ can make us free. Some people don't change their lives because they think that they can't. They are right. Left to ourselves, we are helpless and hopeless. Through faith in Christ, there is real freedom.

Do you have a sin or temptation that has overcome you? You may not want to be free, or you may not think freedom is possible. Confess your helplessness and unbelief to God in prayer. Ask for His grace in Christ to make you free. Listen to the testimonies of others who have experienced real freedom in Christ. Most of all, believe that God is for you. He wants you to be free in Christ.

God, make us free in Jesus Christ.
