"And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD,
choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve."
Joshua 24:15
She sat down to talk with her counselor about her marriage. After much discussion, she said, "I want you to tell me if I should get a divorce." Her counselor wisely responded, "Only you can make that decision. My job is to give the best counsel that I can, but that's a choice that only you can make for yourself." She was not happy with the counselor. She really wanted him to tell her what to do. Wise counsel gives guidance and outlines options, but only the person can make the choice. God gives us choices in life and we are responsible for the consequences.
Joshua led the children of Israel from the wilderness into the land of promise. Now, the people had a choice of going on with the LORD or following other gods. Joshua understood that he could not lead people where they didn't want to go. He put the question to them. He asked them to choose on that day. God has wonderful plans for His children according to His good purpose, but we must make the choice to go on with God. Joshua gave the people their two clear options, to serve the LORD or other gods. He knew the right answer, but only the people could make their own choice.
It's your choice. Have you chosen the LORD to bring you out of the land of bondage? Have you chosen to go on with the LORD? No one else can make that choice for you. God never promises that His way will be easy without battles to fight. He does promise to be with us and lead us all the way. He does promise us, as Jehovah-jireh, to provide for us along the way. He invites us to continue, as we follow Him. Still, the choice is ours.
LORD, we choose to follow You.
