"Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven."
Matthew 5:16
When dad got home from work every afternoon, his three year old son was waiting. Dad would lift him up in his arms and take him to the light switch. He would say to the toddler, "Turn the light on." The child would do so, then he would laugh with joy. Through each room of the house they would go, turning on all the lights. Our Father in heaven lifts us up by His grace, and says to every believer, "Turn the light on."
The real purpose of life is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. The three year old boy enjoyed being in his dad's arms, turning on the light. When we turn on the light through our lives, we bring glory to God. The Lord receives the glory, because He is working in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13). As the child was helpless to turn the light on until his dad lifted him up, so we are helpless to turn the light on through our lives until the everlasting arms of our Father lifts us by His grace and for His glory!
God gives us talents and spiritual abilities to help others. The Lord works through us to minister His love and grace to others. During their dark night of the soul, we turn the light on. It may be through their times of sorrow, guilt, sickness, or some other need. The witness of God's love shines through us. Turn the light on for someone today.
Father, use us to glorify You.
