"And His name shall be called . . . Counselor . . ."
Isaiah 9:6
The prophet Isaiah declared the coming of the Messiah. One of the names describing Jesus the Messiah is Counselor. That is someone who gives the believer wise counsel. That certainly doesn't mean that God will not use other counselors to help us. It does mean that we have a constant, proven counselor in the Lord.
The Lord counsels us in two primary ways. He uses the Scripture and the Spirit. The counsel of God comes to us through the word of Christ and the Spirit of Christ. Secondarily, He chooses to use pastors, other counselors, and friends.

The goal of the Spirit of Christ in counseling us is to lead us into all truth. Jesus said, "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth" (John 16:13). The counsel of the Spirit of Christ is a truth encounter, dispelling the lies which have brought us into bondage. He sets us free with wise counsel from the Word of God.
A six year old boy was having trouble sleeping at night. He was afraid. He believed that monsters were around, ready to get him. These ideas came from watching television. His dad carefully explained to him that the monsters were not real, but they came from the make-believe world of television. When the child finally believed the truth, he was no longer afraid of the monsters.
Do you have any "monsters" in your mind? These are lying thoughts that are defeated through the truth of Christ in the Word of God. Christ is our counselor to set us free through truth.

Lord Jesus, we seek Your counsel to set us free.
