"Cast your burden upon the LORD,
and He shall sustain you."
Psalm 55:22
A burden is like a heavy load on our shoulders. We carry it as far as we can, but sooner or later, it becomes too much for us. Our strength is depleted. We give up in a helpless situation. For those who labor under a burden of worry and anxious care, there is help which comes from the LORD. The psalmist points to the LORD. He is there for us, to sustain us through the difficult situations of life. The Bible says, "He shall sustain you."
We cast our burdens upon the LORD in prayer. The psalmist knew what to do with his burden of care, "as for me, I will call upon God, and the LORD will save me" (Psalm 55:16). Notice that he refers to God as the LORD. That's God's covenant name. In the LORD's covenant, He promises to help the believer trusting in Him. "The LORD is my helper" (Psalm 118:6; Hebrews 13:6). In both the Old Covenant and the New Covenant, the LORD promises to be our helper. The psalmist expressed sure confidence in the LORD's help, saying, "And the LORD shall save me."
The burdens of life will come. We know what to do with them. An old gospel song says, "Take your burden to the LORD and leave them there. If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out. Take your burden to the LORD and leave them there." Do you have a burden today? Carry it no longer. Cast your burden upon the LORD.
LORD, we cast our burden upon You to sustain us.
