Living by Faith

"For we walk by faith, not by sight."

2 Corinthians 5:7

Driving with his son down a long straight highway on a hot summer day, the dad said, "Son, look as far as you can down the road. What do you see?" The son replied, "Dad, it looks like water on the road." His dad said, "I know it looks that way, but when we get closer, there will be no water there. Some people call it a mirage. You can't always go by what you see."

The apostle Paul taught Christians not to live by what they see, but what the eye cannot see. We can't see God, but we believe He is real. We can't see Jesus, but we believe He died for our sins and He is risen again. We can't see the Holy Spirit, but we believe He is with every believer. We live by faith in God, even a God we cannot see.

"God is Spirit" (John 4:24). The word pneuma in the Greek New Testament may be translated spirit or air. What an illustration for God. He is like the very air which we breathe. We cannot see Him, but He is everywhere. God is with us. "He gives to all life, breath, and everything" (Acts 17:25). His presence sustains our very lives. Living by faith in God is trusting Him for every breath. It's depending on Him for every new day. Living by faith is believing God always for everything, but believing is not seeing.

God, teach us to walk by faith, not by sight.
