In Time of Trouble

"God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in time of trouble."

Psalm 46:1

She frantically said to her friend, "My life is in more trouble now than ever. I don't know what to do or where to turn. All I do is cry. I can't believe all of this is happening to me. What in the world can I do?" Her friend said, "I can only tell you what I do when trouble comes. I turn to the Lord for strength and help." The lady quickly responded, "That sounds so good, but I really don't know how to do that." Her friend said, "I can tell you how I do it. I turn to the Bible to find the promises of God's help for those in trouble. I believe the promise and pray it back to God. I have found that I can trust Him to help me."

The psalmist went on to say, "The LORD of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge" (Psalm 46:11). He refers twice to the covenant of God. LORD is His covenant name. That covenant was established through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God promises to be the refuge or safe place for all who trust His covenant word. For those who know Him by faith as LORD, He is with us. Trust is a confident faith that God will do all that He has promised. He says to all believers, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:5; Hebrews 13:5). That's His covenant promise

I hope that your day is free of all trouble, but in this life trouble has a way of finding us sooner or later. When we encounter the troubles of life as believers, we have God's sure word of promise. We can depend upon Him as our refuge and strength, even a very present help in time of trouble. Doubt says, "But how can I know that God is really with me? What if He is not?" Faith says, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble."

LORD, we trust Your promise in time of trouble.
