"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."
1 Corinthians 10:13
A recovering alcoholic shared his faith with a small group. He said, "I had given up any idea of overcoming my temptation to alcoholic drinks. My desire was strong to overcome the temptation, but nothing seemed to work. Then I met a man who told me his story. He had the same problem but had conquered it. His faith in Jesus Christ became his strength to overcome the temptation. I thought sure, I've heard this religious talk before, but I knew that wouldn't work for me. It didn't until someone else told me how to have a real relationship with Christ. His power breaks the lure of my temptation."
All people experience temptation in one way or another. All of us have yielded to temptation, for all have sinned (Romans 3:23). God is faithful to give us the way over our temptations. Someone may ask, "What is the way to overcome?" Jesus said, "I am the way." Each temptation presents a choice. We may yield to temptation or to Christ. God never takes the choice away, but He is faithful to provide the way out in Christ.
What is your greatest temptation? You may have come to a point where you think I cannot overcome it. You're right, we can't but He can. Jesus was tempted in the same ways that we are tempted, through the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. He overcame every temptation, and He can do the same through us. His Spirit lives in all who believe in Him (Romans 8:9). Our choice is to yield to the temptation or to the Spirit of Christ. Escape temptation through the power of Christ.
Father, lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil.
