You were spiritually dead to God, until He made you alive in Christ. You were not physically dead, but spiritually dead. The word dead means separated. You were spiritually dead, that is separated from God. "And He made you alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1). Then, you came to a living faith in the living God through Jesus Christ.
In Christ, God had mercy upon you. He gave you new life, that is life in the Spirit, through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. You received His love. "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ" (Ephesians 2:4-5). It's all about God's love for you in Christ.
Jesus Christ is alive from the dead. Because He lives, you live. You are spiritually alive to God. He awakened your mind to understand His love. He gave you a renewed will that desires to do His will. He touched your heart to come alive to His great love.
You may ask, "Why me Lord? What have I ever done to deserve your only Son?" You should know the answer by now: Nothing. It's all of grace. God's grace, His favor for you, is in Christ alone. You were dead, but now "by grace you have been saved" (Ephesians 2:5).
