How to Seek God

"Seek the LORD while He may be found,
call upon Him while He is near."

Isaiah 55:6

A man had a question for his Christian friend. He asked, "How do people seek God? I happened to hear a preacher on television when I was channel surfing. He was talking about seeking God." The Christian said, "Seeking God means that we call upon Him by faith. The only way we can seek God is by faith, because we can't see Him. Our faith is exercised when we call upon Him in prayer." Then, the man asked, "Do you suppose I could find God?" The Christian responded, "God will have mercy upon anyone who calls upon Him by faith."

The only way to seek God is by faith. "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6). One way that faith is exercised is calling on God in prayer. To simply say words, without faith in God, will not find Him. "How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed?" (Romans 10:14).

Faith seeks God with success, because God seeks us through the Holy Spirit. Left to ourselves, without God seeking us, we would never seek God. "There is none who seeks after God" (Romans 3:11).  He initiates our relationship with Him. He seeks us through Jesus Christ. "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). We seek God because He seeks us. And when we seek God, we call upon Him by faith.

Prayer: Father, we seek You because You first sought us in Jesus Christ. Amen.
